Chair of Governors: Mrs Deirdre Newham MBE

Deirdre Newham joined the local Citizens Advice Bureau as a Volunteer in 1971 subsequently was appointed as its full time Manager, responsible for over 60 voluntary workers and several paid staff. She also served on the National Council of the Association, the latter encompassing its Finance & General Purposes Committee, controlling a budget in excess of £8 million, also Chairmanship of the ancillary Personnel Joint Negotiating Committee and National Appointments Committee.

Deirdre was appointed as a Magistrate on the Northampton Bench in 1977, becoming Chairman of the Bench in January 1996, serving her term until December 2000, followed by Chairmanship of the Magistrates Courts Committee for Northamptonshire until March 2005 when it changed to Her Majesty’s Courts Service.

In 1986 Deirdre was directly appointed by the Secretary of State for Employment as Chairman of the former Northamptonshire Area Manpower Board until its dissolution in July 1988.  After retiring from the Citizens Advice Bureau she became, in January 1993, a freelance Business Consultant, being a Member of the Institute of Business  Advisors. Deirdre was appointed as a Lay Member of the Lord Chancellor’s Interview Panel for Judicial Appointments in September 1997, which continued until 2004, participating in the national appointment of senior Judges, Recorders and other judicial tribunal appointees. She was also a Board Member of the Prince’s Youth Business Trust from January 1997 to 2003.

Deirdre is a former Chairman of the Governors of the University of Northampton, and is the recipient of an Honorary Degree therefrom.  She also served as Chair of the Northamptonshire Police Authority from 2007 until its dissolution in November 2012 and was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Northamptonshire in November 2010.
