Junior Newsletter 9 March 2018

Dear Parents and girls

What a difference in our weather from one week to the next! I enjoyed hearing about the girls’ antics in the snow and seeing photographs of snow sculptures. The decision to close school is not taken lightly and I am sure that it was the correct one, looking back at the conditions on Friday. World Book Day went ahead a little later than expected and we are planning the postponed Grandparents afternoon for Friday 8 June.

I would like to say that my International Women’s Day assembly was the highlight of the week, but it was clearly the Mother’s Day Class Assembly by Reception on Wednesday. Their mummy portraits were beautiful as were the home made bunches of flowers presented at the end. Lines were read clearly and they acted out the story of Jake the Snake, who had lost his mummy, with poise and confidence.

I was pleased to see so many girls wearing home made sashes, rosettes and hats in memory of the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote. We all agreed to #pressforprogress on the IWD website and enjoyed watching the motivational videos that have been produced, especially the one with children in the main roles, do have a look for yourself.

I am delighted to hear that tickets are nearly sold out for the 140th Anniversary Ball; best move quickly if you want to join us.

Good luck to all girls taking music and ballet exams next week!

Ross Urquhart, Head of Junior School

Under 11 Netball A team  IAPS

On Wednesday 28 February the under 11 A netball team went to the IAPS.  The first people we played were King Henry VIII School and we won 5 – 3. Then we played Fairfield and we won with our shooters being Arianna Hay and Samiha Chaudhary. We then played Winchester House which we were quite nervous for because we have lost to them before, but we played really well and drew 1-1 which is the best we’ve ever played against them! Next we were up against Chesham who were a tough opposition and we ended up losing 5-2…. so we had to win the next match to get into the semi-finals…….our last opposition were Saint Christina’s , we played as well as possible with our defenders Charlotte Urban and Lizzie Tansley…. but unfortunately we lost 3-2. We finished coming in 3rd in our pool and 5th overall.

Under 11 Netball B team v Bilton Grange

We had a great match against Bilton Grange on Wednesday. We played well with good team work and confidence. The people who scored some goals for us were Libby Moore, Ariana Baninoe and Shruthi Padmabushan; the final score was 8 – 3 to Northampton High the Player of the Match was Libby Moore who was also our Captain. We hope that we can play as well next week.

Our week

Nursery

This week in Nursery both rooms have enjoyed watching the chicks and have even been lucky enough to have a little cuddle or stroke.  There were six chicks in total.

This week in Kipper Room the girls have been making cards to take home and talking about how our mummy takes care of us. In the library we looked at the book “No” as lots of the girls are developing independence and beginning to use this word frequently. We have also been learning chicken songs in singing group.

This week in Elmer Room the girls have had a very busy week.  We have been following the girls’ provocations.  They have enjoyed improving their number skills, making potions and creating characters out of fruit and vegetables.

We also had a lovely visit to the farm where we got to feed the baby lambs milk, give the goats their food and looked at the chickens, hens and ducks. To finish off we went in the tearoom for a cake and a drink. We were very pleased with the girls’ behaviour on our trip.

We have celebrated International Women’s Day by creating a surprise for mummies. Also during group time the girls liked talking about what they would like to be when they are older and which women were special to them.
Nafisa – ” Mechanic”
Gracie-Jane – “Fairy”

Next week the girls in Elmer Room will have the opportunity to create a symmetrical butterfly and start their Easter card.

Please remember next week:
Kipper girls’ trip to the farm on Wednesday 14th March 2018.  Yellow Day is on Friday so please come in yellow mufti or accessories and bring a £1 to help us raise money for Marie Curie.

There have been several highlights this week in Reception. Dressing up is a big favourite, so World Book Day on Tuesday was a very enjoyable occasion, with all the girls talking about their costume and book. Wednesday was our first Class Assembly and the confidence of all the girls was amazing. They performed, sang and remembered words, a real achievement in front of an audience.

On Thursday we joined in celebrating ‘International Women’s Day’, with a superb display of badges and sashes. We thought about The Queen, Mummies, Teachers and Julia Donaldson and had some fantastic ideas about why ‘girls are good.’!!

“On Tuesday it was World Book Day. We could wear costumes from books. When we went into our classroom our chairs had gone! They sent us a letter saying they quit because we pushed them and pulled them. So we went round the school asking if they had seen our chairs and they said they will keep an eye out because they hadn’t seen them. So then we had to write a letter to them and when we did that we put it in a big, big envelope. When we came back from seeing the chick they were back!” Harriet

“On Tuesday the Year 4s came and read to us and my girls read me ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ then I read ‘Little Miss Lucky and the Pixies’ to them.” Avleen

“We saw lots of facilities when we went for our walk around Wootton on Thursday afternoon. We had lots of fun and my favourite places were the massage place and the big church. When we were there we saw some poppies next to a big cross which was for all the people who died in the war.” Zoe

Last weeks highlights:

Sienna – I really enjoyed making the posters for our Marie Curie Charity event in a couple of weeks. I also enjoyed creating our ‘Health Doctor’ PowerPoint and working with my partner.

Please wear school uniform and a coat. Bring your own lunch and water bottle if you do not want a school provided packed lunch (again, no nuts please).

This weeks highlights:

Miraya – the best part of this week was International Women’s Day. I enjoyed making my plait sash for homework. I also enjoyed researching about Emmeline Pankhurst who was an influential woman in history.

Daisy-May – my highlight this week was dressing up for World Book Day. I was Mary Poppins. I also liked doing calligrams in our English lesson. My best one was the word ‘spike’

Year 5

We will be cooking bread again on Monday 12 March.  The girls have been asked to bring in some ingredients/toppings to adapt the plain bread recipe we used this week. They will be making one roll so only a very small amount of extra ingredients will be required. Please remember that we cannot have nuts in school because of allergies.

We are looking forward to our trip to the Herbert Arty Gallery with Year 3 on Wednesday. We will be leaving school at 8.30 am so don’t be late!  We will return to school by
3.00 pm. Please wear school uniform and bring your own lunch if you do not want a school provided packed lunch (again, no nuts please).

Highlights:

“I got to hold the chicks in GAP club, but it pooed on me!” Maisie Bullock.

Year 6

Last week Year 6  had a more wonderful week than usual! In our Science lesson, we made periscopes that we got to take home.
Fleur said, “I liked Science because it was very fun, we learnt a lot and we did lots of practical work.”  On Wednesday, 6N had a Class Assembly.  Bella said, “The assembly was enjoyable because we created some environmental raps to perform!”  In Maths we focused on pie charts and converting percentages into degrees. Although these activities were really exciting, the best thing was yet to be revealed! Year 5 and 6 found out that their summer school play would be, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by Shakespeare. Year 6 will take the lead and will be auditioning to get a part. It was a fun week and everyone is looking forward to the play!

This week we have created an art gallery in Maths, yes an art gallery! We were asked to represent the world as 100 people in a village, each person in the village representing 71 million people in the real world. This activity really made us think about visual representation of large numbers as well as the environmental issues that face our world today.

We have enjoyed rehearsing for our auditions for the Year 6 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Mrs Fordham and Mrs Dadge were very impressed with our energetic interpretations!

World Book Day was a chance for us to use our creativity and there were some amazing costumes on display!

“I was really looking forward to this week because after the snow day and all the excitement, I was keen to get back to work and see all my friends. My favourite part of the week was World Book Day as I loved seeing all the fantastic costumes.” Sophie Johnson
