Junior Newsletter 8 December 2017

Dear Parents and girls

I am most definitely in the festive mood following our Year 1 and 2 performance of the Landlord’s Cat this week. The girls were all very confident during both the dress rehearsal and on Thursday afternoon with a big audience of parents and other family members. The collective singing was beautiful and the soloists impressed everyone with their poise and volume. It is a big undertaking to deliver these types of shows amidst an already busy school period and I would like to thank all of the staff members who have been involved for their efforts.

Our week started with high levels of excitement among Year 5 and 6 in anticipation of a visit from GB hockey player and Olympic gold medalist, Hollie Webb. She lead training sessions with the girls, answered their questions and signed numerous sticks, bottles and bags. The hockey season has now come to a close, with just a regional tournament to come for the Under 11’s. I was with the B team on Wednesday who ended their season unbeaten with 1-0 win over The Grove A team; an achievement to be proud of!

The talents of Year 6 were also evident on Wednesday when their Class Assembly not only included presentations on Christmas around the world but a performance of Jingle Bells by their own orchestra, all coordinated by the girls.

I hope to see many of you at our Christmas Celebration on Tuesday, which is always a fitting end to the term. This is the last Junior News of 2017 and I would like to wish everyone in our school community a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Ross Urquhart, Head of Junior School

Many congratulations to all the girls in Year 5. They have worked since half term in their house groups to compose a Christmas carol. Mrs Miller has seen some really good teamwork from everyone and been impressed by the high standard of both the melodies and lyrics. The girls performed their carols on Wednesday morning and Artemis and Demeter were chosen as the winners.

Under 11 Hockey B team  v The Grove School

On Wednesday 6 December the B team played against The Grove School and we won 1-0.  We played amazingly with Shruthi Padmabushan, our goalie, saving a lot of goals.  Connie Harvey won Player of the Match and Eryn Currie scored our goal.  It was a great way to end the hockey season with the B team unbeaten winning every match!

Our week

This week in Nursery the girls have been very busy participating in a range of different Christmas activities, creating lovely Calendars and beautiful Christmas cards, singing Christmas songs and listening to stories. They have had fun going for a walk to Forest School where they enjoyed having hot chocolate with marshmallows and a chocolate biscuit as a nice treat. They have been practising their writing skills whilst writing their names in their Christmas cards. We also enjoyed watching the older girls perform their Christmas nativity which was truly wonderful.

Next week we will be carrying on with our Christmas theme.

Please remember that the Nursery Christmas party will be held from 1.00 pm on Wednesday 13 December. Please refer to the letter sent out for more information or speak to any of the Nursery teachers.

This week we have been busy making creative surprises to bring home and the excitement level is rising! We have been working on a text map linked to the story ‘Just Like Jasper’ by Nick Butterworth. In Mathematics the girls have continued with addition using dominoes to help. For their last gym lesson of the term the wall bars came out and some fantastic climbing skills were demonstrated. Our word focus has been on ‘he’ and ‘she’ and with the help of Rosie and Jim some great role play conversations developed. At Forest School the girls watched how to lay and light a fire and then toasted marshmallows over it. They also made a reindeer tree decoration.
Wishing you all ‘Seasons Greetings’ and a ‘Happy New Year.’

Year 1

“Our Christmas play was amazing! I loved it when we were singing the songs and the best one was …a bird can take to the wing.” Deborah

“At Forest School we made a fire and we put the marshmallows on the sticks and then we put them near the fire. We ate our marshmallows with a biscuit. We were making a Christmas decoration. We had to drill to make the holes and then we threaded to make a star shape.” Harini

Year 6

We are now in our last full week of school and Year 6 have been working extra hard; as well as all our schoolwork, we have been having lots of fun!

Our first treat was on Monday, when we had a hockey training session with the famous international hockey player, Hollie Webb. Everyone was super excited to see her, as well as being inspired by her and what she has achieved.  After school, some of us went to the Science extravaganza that was full of big bangs, extraordinary explosions and many interested chemistry lovers!

It was 6H’s assembly on Wednesday (the final class assembly of the term!) and we came out feeling full of the festive spirit!

Thursday, we had maths investigations, where we were faced with a challenging Christmas themed maths problem.

Finally, on Friday we have all come to school in a Christmas jumper!

Phew! It’s the end of the week. We can rest over the weekend and prepare for our Christmas Party next Wednesday!
