Junior Newsletter 4 May 2018

Dear Parents and girls
Trips are an important part of everybody’s time at school. This week Year 6 have enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to gain more independence in preparation for the move into Senior School. One year I will allocate myself to accompany them to Dorset as the scenery looks stunning and the activities are right up my street, especially the watersports. This year Dr Stringer took the opportunity to join them at the end of the week and used it as a time to build relationships in advance of Year 7.
I shouldn’t complain too much, as I was able to attend the GDST Junior Science Conference with five Year 5 girls at the Royal Institution in London. The girls were highly excited and for some it was their first adventure on London Underground; they now think it always takes 5 attempts to board a train. They spent time in the famous Faraday Lecture Theatre, home to the renowned Christmas lectures since 1825. The building was full of artifacts and history which demonstrated the significance of Science in this country. The girls were able to extract their own DNA from cheek cells and turn it into a necklace! They also created their own double helix, learning about the chromosomes that make us all different. The finale was spectacular, with resident experts demonstrating the flammability of gases and generally blowing things up. Our ears survived and I look forward to seeing the girls present an assembly to Junior School on the visit in the future.
Being out in London meant that I missed the Forest School Open Day which was again very popular and I am sure that all visitors were inspired by the enthusiasm of Mrs Waters and the developments she has made in this area. It is fitting that FoNHS have agreed to donate funds towards a permanent shelter for Forest School, something that will benefit many girls now and in the future. You can support this venture by helping FoNHS with attendance at the 140th Anniversary Ball and Family Fun Day, or by volunteering your time to help at the Movie Night or supply raffle/auction prizes.
The 140th birthday celebration on Wednesday was a terrific opportunity to bring all girls, staff and puppies together for a special assembly. Shanaya in Reception was invited to cut the cake along with Mariam, the new Head Girl and Lily who had her own birthday on that day also. Dr Stringer had prepared a presentation with 140 slides containing historical and current images, which everyone enjoyed. All girls received a gift from the school of a pin badge or key ring, making the day a memorable one.

Our week
|
Kipper Room
This week in Kipper room the girls have had fun improving their literacy skills with a range of different writing opportunities using their gross and fine motor skills. These included writing in the coloured sand with the rubber pens, using a range of different paint equipment to develop their mark making on the easel and writing letters in our new Post Office role play area. They also played a game that involved them recognising their own names in the sensory garden.
Both rooms have enjoyed exploring the sensory garden where they had a range of different learning opportunities some of these were developing their number knowledge with the big colourful numbers cards, using their imagination when building a sandcastle or making mud cakes and showing care when looking after the insects.
Elmer Room
In Elmer room this week the girls have loved finding the superheroes in the garden. They gave their friends and teachers clues about where they had hidden them. They also had fun making superhero gingerbread men and women, which they decorated with icing pens. The girls enjoyed doing a range of different movements during physical time along to different songs.
They loved making different things with the mud kitchen down at Forest School and going on a bug hunt with the magnifying glasses. They also enjoyed jumping in the puddles when walking to and from Forest School in the rain.
Hesali and Holly said they have enjoyed painting this week.
Next week the girls will have the opportunity to:
- Explore frozen peas.
- Rescue bugs from ice.
- Special superhero mission.
- Secret writing.
- Superhero accessories.
We are having a Superhero Day on Friday 11 May so your daughter may dress up as a superhero!

This week we have enjoyed celebrating the school’s birthday, especially as we have been counting in tens and could practise this up to 140!
The girls have been very excited to watch the caterpillars turn into cocoons and are now waiting in anticipation for the next stage of the life cycle to emerge!
We hope that you enjoyed joining your daughter at Forest School this week and experiencing some of the wide range of activities on offer. Forest School will continue for Reception girls next Thursday as usual.

“The clay alien houses were fun to make because we used lots of different things to make the patterns. We used lego bricks and there was a special cutter that we cut some bits off and we used those bits to practise on to see if the pattern worked or not.” Avleen
“On Tuesday we went on a wild flower hunt and we found lots of different wild flowers around the playground and on the grass. The sixth former girls were with us and we had to ask them if we could pick them or not. When we got some we came inside and we had to put them in our books where we wanted them and then we had to label. We looked in books and on the computer to find out what they were.” Zoe

2N have had lots of fun this week learning about traditional fairy tales! We have made pig and wolf masks to role play the characters in ‘The Three Little Pigs’ story.
