Junior Newsletter 20 April 2018

Dear Parents and girls

Welcome back to the new school term. I hope you have all found time for some rest and family time over Easter and that the girls are feeling energised. Our 5th Junior School ski trip was excellent and you may have watched some of the video playing on the entrance hall display screen this week. Fabulous snow conditions for the time of year meant that all girls progressed quickly (and Mrs Long!).  The group of 174 GDST girls was an impressive collective and there was plenty of interaction and many email addresses shared.

Welcome to our new girls and their families in Nursery, Year 1, 3 and 4. For the first time ever the new girls are not the most popular people to arrive in school; I am afraid that honour goes to Betty the puppy. In a few visits this week she has managed to win everyone’s heart and we look forward to seeing her spend more time in school and grow into the role of ‘school dog’.
Sports Presentation Evening was a thoroughly enjoyable event, with girls from year 4 to 6 joining Senior School to celebrate the commitment and achievements of every girl that takes part in sport at school. Our 4 Team Captains – Arianna Hay, Samiha Chaudhary, Emily Horne and Charlotte Urban delivered their speeches with poise and clarity. Their confidence and camaraderie was clear to see and I wish to thank them for their service to Junior School sport this year. The guest speaker was Karen Pickering, a GDST alum and 4 time Olympic swimmer. She left all the girls with no doubt, that determination and hard work can overcome any gap in ability. In her case especially when you are swimming against an Australian in Australia! As a Saints fan I enjoyed listening to the Questions and Answers with Jamal Ford-Robinson and as ever, I was so impressed by Ellie Robinson who was celebrated following her Commonwealth gold success.

I hope that many families will join us on Thursday 26 April at 6.30pm for our Junior School Concert, which is always a joyful event. This will be the last concert for Mrs Miller who retires at the end of term and I know that the girls will want to please her with their performances on this last occasion.

Our week

Nursery

Kipper Room

The girls have really enjoyed the warmer weather, exploring water in the garden and visiting the park.

Next week the girls are going to begin some planting.

Elmer Room

The girls have enjoyed taking part in activities linked to our topic of Super Heroes. They have made masks, measured how tall the super heroes are using blocks and playing with the role play costumes and suited hero characters. The girls were also super heroes rescuing animals that had got stuck up the trees at Forest School.

Next week we will continue our Super Hero theme.

This week we have launched straight into our new topic ‘Minibeasts’. All the girls are showing enthusiasm and enjoyment at looking for and identifying what they find.
Our role play is a Rain-forest, with camping and creatures! In Maths we have been counting in 2’s and thinking about pairs!

If the weather is going to be sunny please ensure that you apply a 24 hour sun cream on your daughter before coming to school. Also bring the school sun cap for extra protection at playtime.

A reminder that for Forest School, a thin long sleeved top and long trousers/ leggings should be worn and a sun hat.
