High News – 6 June 2025

In our school crest the rose represents the pupils, who are, naturally, at the heart of our educational approach. We recognise that our girls have only one chance at school, and that their days are precious and fleeting. This gives us a golden opportunity to shape not just their learning, but their future.

Our unwavering commitment to always putting girls first is a core value that drives every action we take and every initiative we lead. It ensures that the focus of all we do is to support our pupils in reaching their full potential and in leading happy, fulfilled lives. This also means guiding them to understand themselves, to develop a positive academic self-image, and to grow into confident, life-long learners. We believe this is achieved through a holistic, 360-degree approach to education, as captured in the Northampton High Approach Wheel.

Suffice to say, our girls never cease to inspire me with their passion, determination and the qualities that define them as future leaders. Indeed, I often refer to the next generation of young women as the game changers of tomorrow. One of the most distinctive traits that they exhibit is confidence, which is a quality that we must celebrate and consciously nurture. True girl power depends on self-belief, and our students build confidence throughout their time at the High School by gaining new mental tools and embracing their authentic selves.

Often, this means taking concrete action steps despite unhelpful thinking patterns, being unafraid to fail, and challenging the worries that might otherwise hold them back. The confidence I witness daily in our girls is not about pretending or putting on an act; it springs from real effort and genuine accomplishment. I particularly value the way we instil a philosophy of being “10% braver” in all endeavours, empowering our girls to become fearless learners. When they do one small brave thing, then the next one will be easier, and soon confidence will flow. We recognise that risk and failure and then the process of recovery and eventual mastery are the very experiences that forge confidence and allow it to flourish.

This term, many of our girls will take on new challenges. Year 7 pupils will venture on their Humanities trip to Shropshire, while Year 9 will embrace the even more adventurous Outward Bound residential, both designed to build confidence physically, socially (through collaboration), and personally. These outdoor adventures are fun and challenging, making the most of the natural environment to stretch and challenge our pupils.

From Year 3 to Sixth Form, pupils will also take part in our much-loved and spirited Sports Day on Friday 13 June, competing in their houses in what promises to be a day full of energy, enthusiasm and camaraderie, even for those for whom sport is not their natural comfort zone.

Later this month, our joyful annual Arts Festival on Tuesday 24 June will offer a vibrant celebration of creativity, showcasing the talents of pupils across both Junior and Senior Schools. This year, we are also introducing live opportunities for students to draw, paint and recite their own creative writing, and we are eagerly looking forward to being surprised and inspired by their imagination and originality.

And finally, on Friday 27 June, we will be treated to our spectacular musical production of The Little Mermaid, a much-anticipated event in which many of our girls are thrilled to be taking part. For many of them, it represents not just performance, but a proud opportunity to be part of something truly special. These events are more than just termly milestones, they are confidence-building experiences where girls step forward, try something new, and give their very best. At the High School, we firmly believe that participation, whether in sport, the arts, or new challenges, develops skills, strengthens resilience and bolsters self-confidence.

Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement, but nothing can be done without hope and confidence. Confidence is not an innate gift; it is a skill to be practised, nurtured and sustained. It grows through taking responsible and thoughtful risks, rising to personal challenges, and persisting with the learning journey, even when the path is uncertain.

Ultimately, our girls cannot be truly confident until they are truly themselves. When we encourage them to discover their passions, to express who they are, to act boldly, and to bounce back from setbacks, we are helping them stockpile the confidence they will need to thrive in the world beyond school.

I am proud that our girls have told us their education has given them the foundations to face challenges with confidence and to believe that there are no limits to what they can achieve. They feel more assured in themselves and their futures than their peers in other schools. They believe they will – and indeed do – go on to lead lives without limits.

Book Review: The Final Year by Matt Goodfellow

Shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal

Life can be tough in your last year of primary school. Tests to take, preparing for the change to high school. Nate is ready for it all, knowing his best friend PS is at his side – they’ve been inseparable since Nursery.

But when they are put in two different classes and PS finds a new friend in Turner, the school bully, Nate’s world turns upside-down. As he struggles to make sense of this and forge new friendships, he’s dealt another blow when his youngest brother, Dylan, is rushed into hospital.

His new teacher, Mr Joshua, sees a spark inside of Nate that’s lit by his love of reading and writing and shows him how to use this to process what’s going on. But with so much working against him, and anger rising inside him, will this be enough?

A powerful and lyrical story about finding your place in the world and the people that matter within it.

Amélie Football Success!

A huge congratulations to Amélie (Year 8), who after two years at MK Dons in her own year group, has successfully trialled for Northampton Town ETC U15 and will be moving there in September.

Amélie will be going to the Gothia Cup immediately after the close of the summer term, where she will be representing the Midlands Independent Schools. Good luck Amélie!

Speech Day Guest Speaker - Maggie Alphonsi MBE

This year’s Speech Day Celebration promises to be particularly special, as we welcome the remarkable Maggie Alphonsi MBE as our guest speaker. Maggie is a trailblazer in international women’s rugby and one of the most recognisable and respected figures in women’s team sports worldwide.

In 2016, Maggie made history by becoming the first England Women’s player to be elected as a National Member of the Rugby Football Union’s Council. She is one of just four females on the 56-strong Council and her role is to be a person of experience and influence in the Game, which includes a leading role in the Diversity & Inclusion Steering Group. We are thrilled to be welcoming such an inspirational speaker, whose own personal ‘why’ has propelled her to extraordinary success.

Those who have heard Maggie speak know that you do not need to be a rugby, or even a sports enthusiast, to feel inspired by how she has navigated the challenges of a male-dominated profession. We cannot wait to welcome her to our school and are excited to share this occasion with you.
