High News – 4 October 2024

On Friday 4 October, we were delighted to host the International University Fair at the High School. Seven universities joined us for the event and we were also pleased to welcome local partner schools for the morning.

The university representatives were kept busy discussing options with girls from Year 8 upwards and we were grateful for their willingness to offer advice to students on routes to studying abroad, whether at undergraduate or graduate level (even if that is some way off from Year 8!).

The universities who visited us are listed below.

  • EHL Hospitality Business School, Switzerland
  • University of Toronto, Canada
  • UBC (University of British Columbia), Canada
  • César Ritz Colleges Switzerland
  • Bard College Berlin
  • Bocconi University, Italy
  • University of Florida

For students and families interested in this option, we intend to host The University Guys again when they next tour the East Midlands. In the meantime, you will be able to catch up on their conversation with the GDST as part of the CareerStart programme, which took place yesterday.

Year 12 and 13 pupils head to Alton Towers

Year 12 and 13 Physics, Maths and Psychology students had a brilliant time at Alton Towers this Thursday, 3 October.

During the journey there, students were asked to fill out an SSS (Sensation Seeker Scale) questionnaire, which can be used to determine the relationship between personality and ride selection at the theme park. Physics and Maths students also used the rollercoasters and rides to experience forces outside of their daily lives. For example, RITA goes from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds (which means that the ride has an acceleration of 10.7 meters per second squared) with passengers experiencing around 4.7 Gs.

Overall, it was a fantastic trip with great weather and even better rides! Thank you so much to Mrs Vizor, Mrs Down and Mrs Harrison.

High Sports

Friday 27 September: Our School Tennis team of Lucy N, Andra T, Frankie B and Lyra S played against St Helen and St Katharine’s last Friday. The girls played against a strong team, the doubles were of a high standard and were all close matches. We enjoyed some amazing rallies and used our volleying and serving skills well, but lost out overall. Remaining determined, we headed into the singles playing some great tennis. Lyra and Andra played extremely well, winning at places 4 and 2! Unluckily Lucy and Frankie lost, but both had great performances throughout their matches. Overall the girls should be proud of how they played and are looking forward to future matches!

Wednesday 2 October: On Wednesday, the U11A Hockey team played two matches at Spratton Hall.  In the first match we played a strong team and defended really well. Sadly we lost 4-0, but everyone played well for our first competitive match of the season. In the second match we improved and lost narrowly 1-0, however we were much better, creating a number of good attacking opportunities and having a few shots on goal. The Player of the Match for the first game was Annabelle and Hester was awarded the honour for the second game. We really enjoyed our first fixture and we are looking forward to our next one.

Wednesday 2 October: It proved to be a tough first game of the season for the U12B team against Spratton Hall. We attempted to move the ball around and were unfortunate to not score despite a few chances. Cora was a great  Goalkeeper and was kept busy and made stunning saves, keeping the score line lower. We will be building upon this performance in our subsequent games.

Thursday 3 October: On a warm sunny afternoon on the new Astro, the 2nd XI took on an enthusiastic Thornton 2nd XI. The match started well with some fabulous passing and distributed the ball swiftly through the structure. The teams’ hard work was rewarded in the first 15 minutes with a lovely goal from Anna C, showing a great first touch at the top of the D. More goals soon followed and Isla H slotted one home after a well worked move from the right side of the pitch. After a few unsuccessful penalty corner attempts, Charlotte F ended the first half with a great strike in the D to finish 3-0. After a positive half time team talk, the girls were back in goal-scoring action again. Anna once again picked up the ball on the top of the D and passed to Katie F who showed her mesmerising skills to slot home goal number 4. Soon after, Anna bagged her second of the match making the score 5-0. The next goal came from a great run from Scarlett C who passed to Katie who scored another great goal. We were now quite confident in the D and some great runs from Poppy and Issy made their defence unnerved and Issy was then able to pop in goal number 7. Well done everyone!

Cobblers Coach joins the ranks: Mrs Saunders-Wall’s Thursday Football Club had an exciting addition this week, in the form of a new coach from local EFL League One side Northampton Town! This collaboration is just one of the many opportunities that the girls will receive as part of our new partnership with the club (more details coming imminently!), and who knows where this could lead them in the future!

Volleyball News: The inaugural Volleyball England Super series gets underway this weekend, bringing together the cream of U18 players from across the country. It is part of the first round of matches in the new 2024-25 Junior Grand Prix season that starts with the most senior level before the U16 and U15 competitions begin in November. Emma B, Year 13, is involved this Sunday and we can watch the match as it will be live streamed at 11.30. Please see the link here: (https://www.youtube.com/@VballEngland/streams). Good Luck Emma, we cant wait to have an update next week!

Open Mornings

Preparations are in full swing for our upcoming school open events, which take place in October on Saturday 5 and Friday 11. These events promise to be fantastic showcases of life at Northampton High School, and will give our visiting families a real insight into what makes our school and its community so special.

Book Review: The Elemental Detectives by Patrice Lawrence

Step into a London lit up by the Elemental spirits: the fiery Dragons, the airy Fumis, the watery Chads and the earthbound Magogs. But humans have been causing chaos for centuries, trampling through the landscape trailing noise, mess and pollution. What if the Elements could slow down this new world… or stop it all together?

The revenge-fuelled Shepherdess, who moves between the everyday and the supernatural London worlds, is the perfect weapon. She brings a sleeping sickness down on the city with the destruction of society in her sights.

Marisee and Robert are the Elemental Detectives chasing the clues to avoid catastrophe: they must face the ghosts of Hyde Park, the monstrous coiled snake of the Serpentine, and a whole host of other fantastical creatures in their mission to stop the Shepherdess and prevent London slumbering for all eternity…

Angelie awarded prestigious County Cricket honour!

This week, we have been delighted to learn of the amazing sporting success of one of our students in the world of Cricket.

Angelie B, Year 7, scooped the Steelback Award at the Northamptonshire County Cricket Awards Evening on Wednesday for her determination, attitude, leadership and engagement with County Cricket this year as Captain of the U11 Girls Team.

With the programme from the event proudly stating that Angelie has “led the team magnificently with growing confidence, maturity and tactical awareness”, we hope you will join us in congratulating Angelie on a highly-prestigious but richly-deserved accolade. Well done Angelie!

Year 7 Textiles Project - We Need You!

This term, our Year 7 pupils are making bean bags. They would like to use recycled materials to fill the bags rather than buying the traditional polystyrene balls, which can take more than a 1000 years to decompose and cannot be recycled.

We are on the look out for the following items, and any donations would be gratefully received:

Degradable packaging peanuts
Any old bean bags (we can recycle the filling and reuse the fabric)

Thank you in advance.

Road layout and traffic flow on site

When leaving the school site in the car, may we please ask parents and visitors  to be aware of the ‘give way’ markings on the road. Drivers coming from the Senior School area of the school are asked to give way to vehicles leaving the Junior School parking area.

Thank you for your continued cooperation.
