High News – 22 November 2024

According to US writer Ralph Waldo Emerson, ‘The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.'

What a huge responsibility comes with the choices we make, even (or perhaps especially) at a young age. This is because we can reflect on the past to glean insights about the future, but it is only in the present moment that choices are made. The existentialist philosopher Søren Kierkegaard observed, ‘Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.’ And I often say to students who are asking about making changes to their timetables mid term, ‘what might ‘future you’ say about the decisions you are proposing to make today?’ As adults, we can all recall pivotal moments where a decision changed something fundamental about our lives. Sometimes these memories bring joy and satisfaction, as we see the benefits of good choices, or we may wonder how life might have changed if we had chosen another route. The beauty of reflection lies in its power to influence, reminding us that our next choice has the potential to change the future.

For children, the process of learning to make good decisions must begin early. Schools play a vital role alongside families in this journey, acting as a foundation for developing lifelong skills in self-awareness and decision-making. And it is a responsibility teachers at Northampton High take seriously. As educators, we see these formative years as golden opportunities to instil habits and mindsets that empower pupils to navigate life’s complexities with confidence and resilience.

Winston Churchill once said, ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.’ This spirit of perseverance is something we strive to embed in our students. In our school, we take a holistic approach to education, focusing on the whole child, her academic progress, emotional wellbeing, and personal growth. Our ‘360-degree Me’ approach ensures that pupils not only excel academically but also develop the skills needed to make thoughtful, informed decisions.

To develop these sound decision-making skills, pupils need opportunities to practise. In senior school, this begins as early as Year 7, when pupils select language options to carry into Year 8. For many, it is their first experience of making a choice with long-term implications. Then in Year 8, they further develop their language choices for Year 9, at which point they again have a hand in refining their own pathways by choosing the creative subjects they wish to focus on. All of these opportunities offer a tangible demonstration of how their decisions shape both timetables and experiences in school.

As students move into Key Stages 4 and 5, choices become more significant. Pupils select from a range of GCSE and A Level subjects, enrichment opportunities and extracurricular activities. These decisions allow them to explore their interests and talents while building the foundations for their future careers. Dedicated guidance processes, including consultations with teachers and careers experts, ensure they make choices aligned with their aspirations and strengths. But most importantly, we hope that their prior experiences of making choices will ensure that they look before they leap and ask the right questions about the courses they will follow.

Christmas Fayre

Christmas Fayre: Tokens and Grotto tickets available to purchase!

You will have seen in recent editions of High and Junior News that we are hosting our annual Christmas Fayre event on Friday 29 November, from 4.30pm until 6.30pm. With preparations for the event in full swing, we are delighted to announce that tokens and Grotto tickets are now available for purchase!

Christmas Grotto: We are delighted that Santa will be making another visit to Northampton High School this year and will be inviting visitors into his Grotto! In an effort to reduce queuing time and allow families to enjoy the entirety of the Fayre, this year’s Grotto will once again be operated on a pre-booked basis. Slots are available on TryBooking by clicking here. Each slot allows two visitors per session, to enable two siblings to attend together if required, at a cost of £7.50 per child. Each child will receive a lovely gift from Santa. Tickets will not be available on the night of the Fayre, so we do encourage you to book your slots in advance to avoid disappointment.

Raffle, Tombola & Junior School Christmas Games: These attractions at the Christmas Fayre will be accepting tokens only, rather than card payments or cash, as we are a ‘cashless’ school. Tokens can be purchased in advance and by doing so, we hope this will reduce queuing time and allow you to enjoy these stalls. Attractions taking tokens will be clearly marked to avoid confusion. Tokens can be pre-ordered on TryBooking by clicking here and once ordered, they can be collected from Junior School/Senior School Reception or from the Collection Desk on the night of the Fayre. Tokens will also be available to purchase at the event itself.

‘Token Tuck Shop’: In addition to our card-payable Festive Refreshments, this year we will also be running a ‘Token Tuck Shop’. This stall will be stocking small treats and refreshments at a cost of between 1-2 tokens each – ensuring that there will be plenty of variety and options for our visitors to spend their tokens on.

We look forward to welcoming you to this community festive treat and thank you so much for your support.

Christmas Concert: Thursday 12 December

We are delighted to invite you and your families to our School Christmas Carol Concert on Thursday 12 December 2024 at 7.00pm in the School Theatre.

The evening will be a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit, featuring carols, readings, orchestra and ensemble performances, choirs, and solos from Northampton High students from Years 7 to 13. The event will showcase our students’ talents, and evidence the many and varied opportunities offered by our school’s vibrant musical community. Please join us for festive refreshments in the Dining Room from 6.45pm and feel free to bring along friends and family members for an entertaining evening and a mince pie or two! There will be a bar available both before the concert and at the interval.

To book your tickets, please click the link below. We would be grateful for any donations, which are entirely at your discretion. Funds raised will support our general school fund and, alongside revenue from commercial lettings, will contribute towards the planned refurbishment of our school library in Summer 2025.

We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating the season together.

High Sports

Cross Country, Friday 15 November: On Friday, the school took 4 teams to the annual Thornton Trail Cross Country event. This is a lovely event organised by Thornton College and is held in their beautiful school grounds. The courses ranged from 1,000m for the Year 3 and 4’s to 2,000m for the Year 5 and 6’s and 2,900m for the Year 7’s. Each year group participates as a team and the combined finishing positions gives the final team score against all of the other teams competing. It is meant to be a fun event and a great opportunity for the girls to experience a race and hopefully ignite a passion for running. Each team received a medal for their first runner back. The Year 7 team consisted of  Zara, Vivi, Nellie, Hester, Cora, Maya A, Annabelle and Lily, and congratulations to our first runner back, Zara, who placed 10th overall. A huge well done to all of our runners!

U13A v Kimbolton, Monday 18 November: We played Kimbolton on Monday 18 November in a Hockey fixture. We started off strong, stringing passes together around the opposition. We had good chances, but their goalkeeper was exceptional. Kimbolton got the first goal just before the break, although it possibly should not have counted as it may have been scored from outside the D. We came out fighting in the second half and it paid off as Lily scored the first goal, closely followed by another from Amélie. We defended strongly to see the game out; Grace and Maya defended well at the back and Ellie kept the ball out of the net. Lizzy and Francesca drove balls into the D and Grace controlled the centre of the pitch and did well up front, which helped us to a 2-1 victory. Zoe was the Player of the Match even though she got an injured 5 times in one game! Amélie

U13B v Kimbolton, Monday 18 November: On Monday 18 November the U13B team played against Kimbolton, with the end result being 2-2. In the first half of the game we enjoyed some amazing play, but the half ended level at 0-0. The second half was tough and Kimbolton scored twice to make it 0-2. However, we didn’t give up, and our pressure paid off with Erin and Gabi scoring two amazing goals to make the final score 2-2. The Player of the Match was awarded to Gabi for her amazing tackles and shots. Well done everyone! Avleen

U15 GDST Hockey Weekend: Good luck to our amazing U15 Hockey team, who were up bright and early to travel to Newcastle for the GDST Hockey weekend on Thursday! We look forward to reporting back on the team’s performances and results in next week’s High News!

Let it snow!: We saw some unexpected snowfall earlier this week, and whilst this meant our school astroturf was out of action for fixtures, it didn’t stop the Year 7’s having fun making snow angels!

Equestrian success at Bloxham Eventer Challenge!

Last Saturday 4 Northampton High students competed in our latest Equestrian competition.

Lexi, Maisie, Esme and Lily entered the Bloxham School Eventer Challenge and performed excellently, placing  3rd in the 80cm class!  Lexi also finished in individual 2nd place, making for a fantastic first event this year for the team. We look forward to the remainder of this season’s events, and will report back in future editions of High News.

Cut Your Carbon Month and European Waste Reduction Week

November is Cut Your Carbon Month and the EcoTeam has set students the challenge of taking action on their carbon footprint. Working on the six simple actions suggested aims to to raise awareness, change behaviours and reduce our carbon emissions as a community. One suggestion is to try a plant based food day.  Switching from a meat-based diet to a plant-based diet for just one day can reduce your carbon emissions by nearly 3KG CO2. Lara M in Year 9 gave it a go and found it wasn’t as hard as she thought it would be to be vegetarian for the day, and now plans to do this more often in the future.

This month is also European Waste Reduction Week; how about addressing both challenges by using ripe bananas to make banana ice-cream, delicious and really fun to make. Mrs Hatwood recommends adding a spoon of Cocoa powder; this dessert is now a firm favourite with her family.

Vegan Ice Cream – 4 frozen bananas, 2tsp Vanilla Extract, 3 tbsp water

  1. In advance: prepare frozen bananas by peeling ripe bananas and cutting into slices before freezing.
  2. Using a blender, blitz all the ingredients until smooth – the texture becomes like whipped ice-cream.
  3. Eating immediately is best! Keep a tub of frozen bananas and make the amount you want, as you need it.
