High News

Friday 2 October 2020

As you know, we love hosting our whole school Open Morning in October each year. We love opening our doors to prospective families, welcoming them into our community to see our lovely campus, meet our staff and enjoy tours with our students. However, given the current Covid-climate and because the health and safety of our pupils and staff is paramount, we have taken the difficult decision to close our physical doors to external visitors at this time, and to offer a virtual event.

Therefore, we are excited to be hosting a special Virtual Open Day tomorrow, Saturday 3 October, giving any parent or student an interactive experience of what a Northampton High School education can offer, from the comfort of their own homes. The event will comprise live Zoom meetings with Mrs Petryszak and senior staff, providing an insight into school life and answering any questions families have, films featuring our students in Junior and Senior School as they talk about what life is like for a student at Northampton High, and a plethora of other information and materials including prospectuses, campus tours and maps, and much more.

It is not too late to join us tomorrow for this special event, and if you, or a friend or relative, would like to visit our Virtual Open Day we would love to see you. We will be posting a link to the Open Day on our Facebook page when the event is live tomorrow at 10am, with the information remaining on our website to be viewed after the event has closed.

We look forward to welcoming families current and new to our special virtual event!

Creative Arts Spotlight

We are delighted to bring back a favourite entry in our weekly High News publication – our Creative Arts Spotlight.

Each week, the Spotlight focuses on a student in our Senior School, who has either produced a fantastic piece of work, or has earned special recognition for their efforts in the classroom. To start of this year’s Spotlight we have a double entry, starting with Isobelle in 6.2.

Isobelle has made super progress with her recent examination practice which you will see above (left). Well done Isobelle!

Our second entry of the week features Angelina in L5. Angelina is pictured above (right) showing her Lino printing sketchbook pages inspired by her “Floral” project work for her GCSE in Textile Design. Wonderful use of primary images which have been simplified to create a Lino block print of a rose. Super work Angelina!

High Sports

This week we’d like to say congratulations to Lydia M in her successful Tennis tournament last weekend.

Lydia and her partner (who she had only just met 15 minutes before playing) came 2nd in an LTA Grade 4 U14 Doubles tournament in Rugby. This was Lydia’s first doubles tournament and the pairing were one of the youngest too. A fantastic achievement Lydia – well done.

Secondly, congratulations to Harriet F and Charlotte F for their selection for County hockey. Well done girls!

Lampie by Annette Schaap

Shortlisted for the 2020 Carnegie Medal

Every evening Lampie the lighthouse keeper’s daughter must light a lantern to warn ships away from the rocks. But one stormy night disaster strikes. The lantern goes out, a ship is wrecked and an adventure begins.

In disgrace, Lampie is sent to work as a maid at the Admiral’s Black House, where rumour has it that a monster lurks in the tower. But what she finds there is stranger and more beautiful than any monster.

Soon Lampie is drawn into a fairytale adventure in a world of mermaids and pirates, where she must fight with all her might for friendship, freedom and the right to be different.

Uniform Reminder

I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents that when we return after half term break on 1 November, all pupils up to and including Lower Fifth must be back in full uniform. The only exception will be blazers, which cannot easily be washed daily. We will update you if this changes.

Until then, we are maintaining good ventilation in our classrooms as per the Covid-19 guidance and this may mean that pupils feel a little cold as the weather cools down.

We are permitting pupils, until further notice, to wear either their school long-sleeved PE top or PE Jacket over the top of their uniform. It must not be a substitute for the school jumper and no other jumpers, hoodies or outdoor jackets are permitted to be worn inside the classroom.

Social Distancing and Face Coverings Reminder

A reminder that in school we expect pupils to wear a face covering at all times except when in a lesson, Late Prep or Late Stay or when eating/drinking. This includes before school, after school and lunchtimes.

Pupils must also maintain a social distance of at least 1 meter+ from all other people at all times, including those in their ‘bubble’.  Please discuss the importance of these measures at home which will support our messaging in school.
