Year 13 Field Study at Nene Wetlands

Northampton High School A-Level Biology students recently embarked on an immersive field study at the Nene Wetlands Reserve

Northampton High School A-Level Biology students recently embarked on an immersive field study at the Nene Wetlands Reserve, managed by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Northamptonshire (BCN) Wildlife Trust, gaining valuable hands-on experience despite challenging weather conditions.

The visit was expertly guided by Katie King from the BCN Wildlife Trust, who provided the students with a comprehensive overview of the charity’s vital conservation work, directly linking it to their A-Level Biology curriculum. A particular highlight was learning about the recently introduced beavers and the extensive preparation undertaken at the reserve to facilitate their arrival.

Equipped with their meticulously planned investigation strategies, the students focused on the effect of various environmental factors on the distribution of a specific species. Battling admirably through wet weather, they demonstrated impressive dedication to collect sufficient data for statistical analysis, an essential component of their coursework.

Their hard work was pleasantly rewarded with a well-deserved lunch at Nando’s, conveniently located alongside the Rushden Lakes complex, which neighbours the reserve. Following an early return to school to dry off, the A-Level group has since been diligently preparing their comprehensive written reports, analysing their findings from the field.

This marks the third successful year of this insightful visit, offering students a unique perspective on the ecological importance of the area beyond the popular Rushden Lakes retail park. The school firmly intends to return again next year, continuing to provide this enriching outdoor learning experience that complements classroom studies with real-world biological research.
