‘We really enjoyed our visit to Coventry Cathedral – not only to enjoy the beauty and complex architecture of the Cathedral itself, but also to see the legendary Dr Peter Vardy and his Candle Conference on Human Nature. Dr Vardy, whose works are throughout the Religious Studies A Level course, spoke with such passion and intensity on a range of ethical approaches including: Natural Moral Law, Situation Ethics and Utilitarianism. Dr Vardy is an exceptional Theologian and orator. He kept us all highly engaged by applying the ethical theories to scenarios including abortion, euthanasia, artificial intelligence and war, to name a few. The pace of the lectures was exciting and really supported us with our revision as well as stretching and challenging our minds towards University level teaching and learning. Our favourite part of the day was probably the debate where we got the opportunity to speak on the microphone in response to Dr Vardy’s statement ‘This House believes that murder can never be justified’. Dr Vardy really helped to secure our understanding that studying Religious Studies is such a useful A Level for our futures- we are critical thinkers, debaters and really enjoyed the opportunity to exhibit those skills with pupils from other schools too.’
