Flooded with natural light, the Art Department offers a suite of spacious and well equipped studios which provide excellent general facilities as well as specialised and diverse media areas including ceramics, painting, printmaking, fashion, photography, sculpture and 3D construction. There is a rich resource library of books and objects to extend and enhance learning, supplemented by a comprehensive Art section in the central school library. A multi-media approach to studies is encouraged, and students have the opportunity of working across traditional disciplines, such as painting and life-drawing, as well as cutting-edge visual imaging technologies, in the realisation of their ideas.
The energetic, rigorous and challenging creative environment of the department aims to help each student realise their own artistic potential, and encourages them to think for themselves, to question and to reflect upon both their own work and the work of others. Skills, techniques and processes are developed and refined throughout the key stages and students work within a stimulating visual environment where they are exposed to, and learn from, the work of their peers. Practical studies are informed and inspired by exposure to both historical and contemporary artworks, and students are expected to develop their critical and analytical understanding of ideas and artistic practices.
Small group sizes at Key Stages 4 and 5 give students the ability to formulate very personal responses to stimuli, and also allow for a high level of differentiation in terms of content, teaching, and learning styles. The department has a dedicated and highly qualified teaching team committed to the development of excellent working practice and outcomes. Individual staff members have their own areas of specialist knowledge, and personal skills and expertise are shared .
The work students produce in school is further supported through trips and visits throughout the school year. This year the department is taking students to
